We got a call

but don't get too excited for us yet.  DH talked with our social worker this afternoon.  He was calling about a two year old girl.  It's a legal risk situation, but we can deal with that.  Remind me to write a post about what "legal risk" means when adopting from foster care.  The part that's holding us back is that they suspect she has fetal alcohol syndrome.  There's some testing going on now.  We're trying to get more information.  Given what I know about fetal alcohol syndrome, I don't know if we can take that on.  I need to go do some research.

WOW! What I know about FAS is the severity is a HUGE factor in the child's life and your ability to care for her. For her sake, I hope it is mild. Pisses me off that there is even SUCH a thing as FAS! Good luck hon!

Read "The Broken Cord" it is a memoir of a child with FAS. Will give you a good picture of what you might experience. Make an informed decision as I'm sure you will. There is no real definative test for FAS, just a history of drinking during pregnancy and possibly a typical appearance coupled with learning disabilities and behaviors. Each child is very different as are we all! Good Luck, we are just being down the foster/adopt road.

We adopted a girl and are just discovering that she possibly has FAS. Actually stumbled across your blog while searching for more info. Weird. It's quite the emotional journey, adoption that is. We didn't know about alcohol use, but surprisingly I am feeling pretty optimistic with our daughter's outcome if she truly has FAS. She is the happiest baby I have ever seen! Good luck on your journey.
